Skip and Moonstone on the Emerald Coast

We are Skip and Moonstone White, Emerald Coast Designs.

An expert goldsmith, silversmith and jewelry creator, Skip has worked with precious metals and gemstones since 1975.  He was one of the earliest of the artisans and and craftpersons who made a living selling their own work at outdoor art festivals when the trend became popular in the late 70’s and early 80’s.

Moonstone has made a living as a creative artist since 1981 working in a variety of media including painting, fine art batik and sculptured clay.  Both have won many awards over the years at a variety of juried fine art festivals.

We met in 1984 while living in the West, both of us exhibiting at art festivals as independent artists.

Beginning in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, Skip did his very first art shows as a leathersmith, accenting his hard-tooled leather purses and briefcases with gemstones set in silver.  At that time he used semi-precious stones such as turquoise and agate.  He maintained a store and workshop in Breckenridge, Colorado, and exhibited his work at art and craft shows throughout the Western and Midwestern regions.   In the late 70’s he closed the store and began doing art and craft shows for a living full-time.

After meeting each other in the mid-1980s at an art show, the attraction was immediate.  We soon discovered our shared interest in minerals and gems and often stopped at roadside rock shops in remote areas on our way to art festivals in the Southwest.

At Moonstone’s encouragement, Skip made the switch exclusively to jewelry-making and has never looked back.  He began expanding his line to include a great variety of both precious and semi-precious gemstones.  In 1988 he moved to Durango and we’ve done art shows together ever since.

In 1995 we moved to Navarre, Florida, where we could do art shows all year around.   Today, Skip makes fine gemstone jewelry using 14K gold and sterling silver, using both construction and lost-wax methods.  He uses freshwater pearls, turquoise, lapis and star sapphires, as well as transparent gemstones with unusual cuts to create pieces that are uniquely elegant.

We welcome custom orders and often set gems for people who have somehow or other acquired loose gems and didn’t know what to do with them.  We use a wide variety of gemstones in many colors, focusing mainly on semi-precious stones such as topaz, amethyst and similar stones that have good hardness and are relatively inexpensive.  Some of our best sellers are mystic fire topaz, aqua blue topaz, amethyst, ametrine, and Lindy Star Sapphires.  Please feel free to contact us!

We still enjoy searching out new gems and minerals.  We visit the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show each year, one of the largest venues that attracts dealers from all over the world.  Above: a few photos from a gem-hunting trip to Thailand.
